Celebrating the exceptional achievements of the community members, the 17th edition of the Asian Achievers Awards is around the corner and nominations are now open for the public to nominate community members they find inspirational. Every year, we set a particular theme for the Awards and this year's theme is 'Media, Arts and Culture'.

The all-inclusive and innovative awards not only endorse icons of the Asian community, but also unfailingly raises funds for sponsored charities. This year, we have chosen world's biggest NGO, The Akshaya Patra Foundation, and as is every year, aim to collect thousands of pounds to encourage the values and mission of the charity. Founded in 2000, the Foundation works on a simple vision- To let no child be deprived of education or food. Along with the partnership of the Government of India and several State Governments, the organisation today runs the world's largest mid-day meal programme. It aims to feed 5 million children by the year 2020, and with the AAA 2017, we wish to contribute in the honourable endeavour.

The Media, Arts and Culture award is given to those who have made a mark in the sector, including print and broadcast media, cinema, art, and culture. Last year, the award was given to the well known Singh Twins, who have through their artistic flair made a reputation for themselves. Amrit and Rabindra Singh draw on the tradition of Indian miniature art, and address several familiar and universal subjects such as globalisation, migration, and celebrity culture.

The Businessperson of the Year award is reserved for someone who is potentially driven to address social issues. The award was conferred to Nik Kotecha, CEO, Morningside Pharmaceuticals, last year. Owner of a multi-million pound pharmaceuticals business, Kotecha's vision involves making quality healthcare affordable and accessible throughout the world.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is for those who, in their lifetimes, have made immense contributions in their choice of fields, setting an example for the younger generation. Last year, Lord Naren Patel KT deservedly took home the honour for his internationally known contribution to the field of high risk obstetrics.

If you know of any over-achieving Brit-Asian who deserves to be accoladed, nominate them online at www.asianachieversawards.com, or register their details on nomination forms in Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar, this week. Nominations open till July 31.
