India’s shooting contingent finished its campaign at the ISSF World Championship 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan, with 14 medals - six gold and eight bronze. The regular shooting events for both Olympic and non-Olympic disciplines concluded last week. However, the running target events will continue till August 31st but there is no Indian representation in these.
Currently, the Indian shooting team is second in the overall medals tally behind the People’s Republic of China, who clinched 15 gold, seven silver and six bronze medals. The USA, with five gold, two silvers and a bronze, are third. The Indian shooters also obtained four quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics at the Baku meet.
Rajeshwari Kumari (women’s trap), Sift Kaur Samra (women’s 50m rifle 3 positions), Akhil Sheoran (men’s 50m rifle 3 positions) and Mehuli Ghosh (women’s 10m air rifle) secured the Olympic quotas. The 50m pistol women's team comprising Tiyana, Sakshi Suryavanshi and Kirandeep Kaur capped off India’s campaign with a gold medal finish.
Amanpreet Singh won a gold medal in the men’s 25m standard pistol while Shiva Narwal and Esha Singh bagged gold medal in the mixed 10m air pistol team event. The Indian women’s trio of Rhythm Sangwan, Esha Singh and Manu Bhaker also clinched the gold medal in the women's 25m standard pistol event.
The 50m rifle 3 positions men’s team of Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Niraj Kumar and Akhil Sheoran and Mehuli Ghosh, Tilottama Sen and Ramita, who topped the podium in the women’s 10m air rifle team event, accounted for India’s other gold medals in Baku.
