One to one with Keith Vaz

Mohamed Khemiri was born in Tunisia, speaking a North African dialect Mohamed studied tourism, art and languages in the high institute of tourism and worked in the tourism industry for 17 years.

He has established his own Mosaic company having studied the ancient art of mosaic and has produced mosaics of many famous people. The artwork is done from using ancient stones and combining them in a special technique. Most of the works are done by using photographs rather than live sittings.

Mohamed is fascinated by ancient art and mosaics and promotes the ancient technique of handmade mosaic and believes that this is an art form that is in danger of being forgotten.

 He is married and has two children.

One to One Questions

1) Which place, or city or country do you most feel at home in?

I was born in Tunis and Tunisia will always be my home where I feel most in my soul.

 2)What are your proudest achievements?

Marrying a beautiful caring wife and having 2 gorgeous children.

3) What inspires you?

Politeness and humbleness of human kind combined with their highest skills and talents.

4) What has been the biggest obstacle in your career?

I must admit that the doors have been always wide open in front of me and I am a very lucky person many times. Of course, obstacles appeared from time to time but solutions where found within a very short amount of time.

 5) Who has been the biggest influence on your career to date?

My parents. Also education, and my best teachers were a major guiding influence on my career and through my entire life. 

 

6) What is the best aspect about your current role?
I am passionate about art in general and calligraphy and mosaic artwork in particular. Passion remains the best aspect about my current role as a mosaic designer.

7) And the worst?

Hoping to finding the right audience …

8) What are your long term goals?

To find the right people who can help keep the ancient Greco roman art of making mosaics going. Hoping they will understand and appreciate this intricate handmade work of tiny little cubes of tesserae put together to achieve high quality artwork of mosaic.

9) If you were Prime Minister, what one aspect would you change?

I would ask football clubs to at least halve the football-players wages and give the rest to the increasing number of homeless people.

10) If you were marooned on a desert island, which historical figure would you like to spend your time with and why?

All prophets and messengers of God were the best chosen human beings to spread to true word of peace. Prophet Mohammad peace and prayers be with him remains my favourite and He is the one and only historical figure trustworthy and honest that I would like to meet.
