One to One: Krishna Suresh Councillor – London Borough of Harrow

Krishna has lived in Harrow for 30 years, he graduated from Middlesex University and is an InspireMDX Network Leader and a Mentor for Middlesex University.  Krishna joined the Labour Party in 1999 and was elected as Councillor for Rayners Lane in 2010.   He was the Mayor of Harrow in 2015/16 and almost four years he has been the Local Government Cabinet Member.  In addition, Krishna is the Trustee of Harrow Association of Disabled People and he likes to work closely with all diverse community in Harrow and beyond.

 

Questions: 

 

1)  Which place, or city or country do you most feel at home in? 

 

Even though I was born and bred in Sri Lanka, the years I spent in UK is more and Harrow is my Hometown now, I am living in Harrow for almost 30 years.

 

2) What are your proudest achievements? 

 

During my Mayoral year 2015/2016, I instructed Harrow Council to install new benches on high streets and parks, install festive lights for all high streets in harrow, introduced no smoking in all children play areas in parks and also in the future I instructed to build a Fountain in front of the New Civic Centre in Harrow

 

3) What inspires you? 

The environment, atmosphere, and the people I meet on a day-to-day basis in my town.

 

4) What has been biggest obstacle in your career?

 

When I got elected as a Councillor in Rayners Lane where Labour Party never had Labour Councillor but I really worked hard on a grassroots level to prove my ability and commitment.

 

5) Who has been the biggest influence on your career to date? 

 

My family and the Community as they appreciate and encourage me constantly on a regular basis.

 

6) What is the best aspect about your current role? 

 

As a Public Health Portfolio holder making sure people of all age groups are following the public health guidance for healthy living and as an Equalities portfolio holder making sure each human being are valued in Harrow.

 

7) And the worst? 

 

The Austerity is causing deprivation and obesity in Harrow and trying to educate and guiding people to eat healthy food for healthy living. 

 

8) What are your long term goals? 

 

I fulfilled all my dreams and I am very satisfied but people are pushing me to become a Member of Parliament.

 

9) If you were Prime Minister, what one aspect would you change? 

 

I make sure the people of Britain all treated on the same level, regardless of their race, gender, religion, colour, disability, etc. and to see that people all get the equal opportunity.

 

10) If you were marooned on a desert island, which historical figure would you like to spend your time with and why. 

 

Definitely with the former President of United States Barack Obama as I was really inspired by his first presidential campaign speeches, he talked about everything in the United States at all levels.
