The Royal Society elects its first Indian President

The Royal Society has elected Sir Venkatraman (Venki) Ramakrishnan as their new President, after their current President Sir Paul Nurse finishes his 5 year term on November 30th this year. Sir Venki will take up the post from 1st December 2015 for 5 years.

The President's role involves presiding over meetings of the Council and he is Chairman of the Trustees. He will also need to preside at other meetings of the Society including the Annual Meeting for the election of Fellows and Foreign Members and the Meeting on Annual Admission Day. He would also need to address the audience at the Anniversary Meeting.

The Indian Journalists Association along with Dr Yusuf Hameid had organised a lunch at the Bombay Brasserie on June 25th, to honour him for acquiring his new role. The lunch was attended by veteran journalists and other prominent guests including Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore and Great Bake-off semi-finalist Chetna Makan.
