This year’s South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM), from July 18 to August 17, is themed “Free to Be Me.” This theme celebrates the beauty and power of embracing one's true self, highlighting the importance of personal authenticity and self-expression within the South Asian community.
“Each of us has a unique journey marked by experiences that shape who we are. For SAHM 2024, we want to hear about the moments that have taught you valuable lessons and fostered your growth. Your story matters, no matter who you are,” is the core message of South Asian Heritage Month.
Our stories connect us in profound ways, and there are countless ways to share them. Whether through art, writing, music, fashion, or food, your heritage and individuality are worth celebrating. Let’s explore and honour the diverse ways we express our roots and personal journeys.
Co-founders Jasvir Singh and Binita Kane stated, “South Asian Heritage Month is a crucial initiative for helping people understand what it means to be South Asian today. It also explores how South Asian identity is reflected in various aspects of society.
“This month is inclusive and meant for everyone, regardless of their heritage.”
This year, the focus is on themes that reflect community spirit and embody the essence of “Free to Be Me.”
Here are the themes to explore during SAHM
Identity: Reflect on what makes you unique and the moments that have defined your identity, proudly celebrating your South Asian heritage from countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
Community: Consider how we support and uplift one another. Share insights on the strength and unity within the South Asian community in the UK and how it has positively influenced your life.
Gender: Delve into what gender means within your cultural context. Explore how traditional roles and expectations have shaped your journey and the ways you've navigated them.
Faith: Discuss how your faith impacts your life. Reflect on the role of spirituality and religious practices in your daily life and personal growth.
Family: Examine the role of family in your story. Share the lessons, values, and traditions passed down through generations and their influence on your life choices and identity.
Life choices: Highlight how your South Asian heritage has shaped your life decisions. Emphasise the choices that have led to personal growth and how you have embraced change while staying connected to your cultural roots.
Positive impacts: Celebrate the positive impacts your South Asian background has had on your life in the UK. Acknowledge the unique perspectives and strengths you bring to your community and recognise those who serve as role models.
