The Royal family paid tribute to the 453 men and women who died fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. The memorial service was held at St Paul's Cathedral.
The commemoration held also marked the end of the 13 year long warfare. The Queen was joined by many veterans and families of British soldiers who died in Afghanistan.
Concurring services were also held across the UK, in Afghanistan and in Germany. Prime Minister, David Cameron also gave a reading at the ceremony and prayers were given by veterans and family members of those who passed away.
The Ministry of Defence revealed that there were 140,000 UK troops in Afghanistan and the total operational cost was £19 billion. As well as the 453 UK troops that were killed, 108 died in 2009- proving to be the worst year. Additionally, 500 mentors stayed on in Afghanistan.
