A petition has been initiated to allow parents over the age of 65 to join British citizens as adult dependents.
The UK has tightened its immigration laws when it comes to allowing who enters Britain; be it students, or the elderly. These new laws have made it difficult for many people, especially for those who have parents over the age of 65.
This petition was created by Himanshu Sori, whose parents are over the age of 65. He would like to have his parents over to strengthen their bond with his child, while it will be an opportunity for his child to learn about their culture and get a good understanding of family relationships.
Himanshu Sori stated in the petition, “I do not expect them [his parents] to claim any benefits, like pension. Whatever visa may it be, it could restrict the right to settle. When they are here, I would be supporting them financially. I have done this in past. A British citizen born here will have their parents nearby. Their children will have a more integrated family life with the grandparents around.”
The rule, however, does not apply to EU citizens. Sori stated, “EU citizen is allowed to bring their parents as adult dependents, when they migrate from other EU countries to UK, even if for short durations.”
There are many people who could benefit with this petition as it seems like a constant struggle for many to bring over elderly or ailing parents. It also becomes difficult for people residing in Britain to constantly travel back to where their parents reside in order to check on them, health-wise.
So far, the petition has over 5,000 signatures. At 10,000 signatures, the Government will respond to this petition. 100,000 signatures are required in order for this petition to be considered for debate in the Parliament.
