More than 1,400 karyakars from across the UK and parts of Europe attended the National Karyakar Shibir at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London on Sunday 5 July 2015.

The shibir, entitled ‘Upasak Karyakar’, was aimed to help karyakars imbibe key principles of spiritual knowledge in the activities that they undertake. Sadhus spoke of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s personal efforts to impart spiritual wisdom during his travels. They also spoke of the conviction and strength that karyakars should foster in their lives through spiritual knowledge and observance. Pujya Doctor Swami (Sadhu Swayamprakashdas) offered his practical guidance on how delegates could strengthen this knowledge further.

Sadhus from India shared testimonies of dedicated karyakars in India whose personal endeavours, amidst numerous challenges have made a positive impact on many lives. Insight into working together and introspecting on one’s progress was given. Doctor Swami concluded by energising the audience with a motivational discourse on taking ownership and developing confidence in one’s work.

One karyakar spoke of how much he had enjoyed the shibir, “There was an excellent reference to the introduction of satsang at an early age, even to babies. Just saying the Jaynaad and showing them murtis will have a positive influence which will become apparent at a later age. There was lot more that I learnt, but this hit a chord with me especially as I have a granddaughter.”
Another karyakar said, “Shibirs are always inspiring and show us practically how we need to make changes in the way we think and live to lead happier and more peaceful lives. The part that struck me most was the pravachan using the Vachanamrut to give us a practical approach to handling disagreements and our reactions to people/things we don't like. Identifying the flaws within us helps us to react better.”

Neasden Temple Organises Appreciation Events to Thank Local Neighbours and the Elderly

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden, London has fostered a profound sense of community spirit since it opened its doors in August 1995.

This year, as the Mandir celebrates its 20th anniversary, two special programmes were held to thank the elderly and local neighbours for their continued support and commitment.

Guests on both days were welcomed and personally looked after by a team of dedicated volunteers. Upon arrival, each had their photograph taken with the Mandir backdrop which was later gifted to them as a memento of their visit.

The purpose of the event for the elderly on Sunday 10 May 2015 was to celebrate their efforts in helping to build the Mandir over 20 years ago and to appreciate their dedicated services to this day.

These senior volunteers were entertained by musicians, comedians, a colourful dance, various games and presentations, and a magic show, before being treated to a full vegetarian meal. Sadhus and trustees of the Mandir also offered their personal appreciation, thanking everyone for their invaluable contribution over the years.

More than a 150 local residents were hosted at the Mandir for a similar event on Thursday 21 May 2015. Invitees included representatives from the three local schools, businesses (including IKEA, Tesco and Europcar), staff at the nearby health centre, priests from the local churches, and the neighbourhood police.

Guests enjoyed a special guided tour which included an exhibition explaining the multifarious activities organised by the Mandir. After a video about the Mandir’s making and its current role as a hub of community services, everyone was again thanked by the Board of Trustees for their years of support and friendship, stretching back over 33 years in some cases.

Girish Patel, one of the volunteers at the Mandir, explained, “The Mandir opened in 1995 as Europe’s first traditional Hindu temple. Since then, it has become a valued part of Britain’s religious landscape and earned international acclaim for its architectural beauty. In all these years though, even while we’ve had royalty, heads of state and various celebrities visit, we have never lost sight of one our most important supporters – our neighbours.”

The guests were treated to a sumptuous vegetarian meal before leaving with a greater understanding of the Mandir’s local, national and international contributions and a deeper sense of pride and appreciation for this iconic building in their neighbourhood.

One of the residents shared: “Thank you for a wonderful evening. You made us all feel very special and part of your community. Everyone we met could not do enough for us and appeared happy that we were with you all. The Mandir is an amazing place. One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.” Local resident Edwina added, “You guys do a great job. I never knew so much happened inside this building.”
