A major three-day festival to mark the installation of ten life-size Hindu deities at a temple in Leicester brought together hundreds of worshippers from all over the country.
On Saturday night, a vibrant bhajans ‘Indian hymns’ programme saw local and national talent, new and old, bands and individuals entertain a house-full audience. Guest singer Kirtidanbhai from Porbandar, India, was showered with pound notes as he sang traditional and energising songs. Bands present included Bajrang, Narshi Mehta and Gopal Lal Bhajan Mandals.
The event was compered most appropriately by Madhavbhai Soni, pictured, whose Late brother, Naranbhai, was among the pioneers of such music in the Seventies, along with Tribhovanbhai Damji Parmar, Shashikantbhai Sonigra, Rambhaben Arya, Bhagwanjibhai Chauhan – all Late. Also present was spiritual leader Ramnikbhai Dave.
Much credit to Madhavbhai for his contributions and efforts to ensure that this niche music and legacies remain alive. Also for his part in recognising, encouraging and inviting young and new talent to the floor. The Pran Pratistha Mahotsav took place at the Shree Hindu Temple and Community Centre in St Barnabas Road last weekend.
