Nottingham: A Sikh shopkeeper was saved by his turban, after being hit with a bottle by a shoplifter.

The court heard how the attack by 49-year-old Ronald Richardson, from Nottingham, left Gurpal Singh (42) with hearing problems and a bump on the side of his head.

Singh said, “It was very odd- he had paid for the whiskey but tried to take a few bars of Dairy Milk worth £7.”

Ronald Richardson admitted threatening behaviour and assault and was ordered to pay £200 compensation, and also given a suspended 16-week jail term.
