Schoolboy Hassan Akram is smiling after notching up an amazing fourteen A*s in his GCSE exams. But Hassan, 16, has spent his young life battling a brain tumour that has left him deaf in one ear.

The Walsall wonderkid now hopes to be the first in his family ever to go to university. Hassan’s exam passes, which include subjects such as Chinese, are inspirational. Not least because he has endured a series of operations to remove a cholesteatoma, a rare and recurring non-cancerous tumour. T

hose procedures have left him deaf in the right ear, and without an eardrum. But against all the odds, he sailed through his exams and is now set to study A level maths, chemistry and biology at Queen Mary Grammar School.

After that, he hopes to progress to university and pursue a career as a neurologist.
