Religious preference is a personal choice, but it seems as though not many people agree with this mindset. A family from Bradford were driven to leave their home after they converted from Islam to Christianity. This treatment happening in present-day Britain is repulsive.
Nissar Hussain (49) and his family have been constantly attacked by their neighbours who have termed them as blasphemers. The family are said to have been attacked in the street, had eggs thrown at their windows, as well as had their car windscreens smashed repeatedly.
The constant attacks has taken a toll on Nissar Hussain, who worked as a nurse. He gave up his career after he was diagnosed with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Hussain had converted to Christianity in 1996, and had moved from his previous home in 2005, after Muslims allegedly held a campaign of ethnic cleansing against them.
After settling in well at their new residence, trouble started brewing after Hussain participated in a TV documentary about the ill-treatment of Muslim converts, in 2008.
It is alleged that the a large Muslim family had recognised them and were immediately boycotted. They were also referred to as 'apostates', a reference used to people who abjure a religion for another; this is considered as a crime punishable with death in staunch Islamic countries.
Hussain has stopped attending church and has criticised the Anglican Church for not providing them with any substantial support. He said, “We have given up on the Church of England, they have done nothing for us.” He also mentioned how he felt let down by the police and lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Nissar Hussain's neighbour was convicted after Bradford Crown Court of a public order offence. He was obliged to retain the peace after one of Hussain's children recorded the neighbour on a mobile phone, making threats in fierce anger.
A spokesman for the West Yorkshire Police said, “We are aware of an ongoing matter involving Mr Hussain and are working closely with partners to resolve this situation. All reports of crime are taken seriously and are investigated thoroughly.”
