Councillor quits after being deemed 'not a fit and proper' person to drive a taxi

A Labour councillor has quit after being deemed not a fit and proper person to drive a taxi by his own authority. Gurpal Atwal has resigned as the member for the Uplands Ward on Oadby and Wigston Borough Council. It follows the council refusing to give the 45-year-old a licence to be a cabbie in the district.

Coun Atwal appealed against the ruling and the resulting court case heard allegations of swearing and racism. It was also heard that the councillor used unlicensed escorts for taxi journeys for young people.

Coun Atwal lost the case and the court was told the allegations against him stemmed from a dispute with a former business partner. He continues to deny all of the accusations against him.
