According to an exclusive poll conducted by YouGov for The Huffington Post UK, more than half of Britons believe Muslims pose a threat to the UK, more so now than in the immediate aftermath of the 7/7 bombings ten years ago.
The survey revealed that more than ¾ of people surveyed (79%) believe that another high-scaled terrorist attack is likely to take place in Britain.
56% of people thought that Islam is a “major” or “some” threat to western liberal democracy. The same question was asked a day after the 7/7 attacks and the results in 2005 was 46%.
Miqdaad Versi, the assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, did not find the survey surprising. He believes that the growing fear of Islam has been caused by the actions of a “very small minority.” Versi said, “It shouldn’t be taken a representative of the majority just as the far right shouldn’t be taken as representative.”
