The Department for Work and Pensions has recognised Brent Council as an employer leading the way when it comes to improving access and support for people with disabilities, or long-term health issues.
The award highlights the work that the council is doing to promote equality, diversity and cohesion as a locality leader, as a provider, as a commissioner of services, and as an employer.
Alice Lester, Operational Director for Regeneration, Growth and Employment at Brent, said, “We are delighted to be recognised as a Disability Confident Leader. It’s estimated that seven in ten employed people with disabilities have been impacted by loss of income, furlough, unemployment or other damaging effects as a result of the pandemic. This award recognises the great work that Brent is doing to remove barriers to employment, and ensure that our residents are able to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations.”
The award follows an external evaluation of the council’s support for staff and residents with disabilities by the Shaw Trust charity, which helps disabled and disadvantaged people into employment and independent living.
