Home-schooled children at risk of radicalisation

The education secretary, Nicky Morgan, told officials that home schooling should be reassessed due to the concerns over thousands of children potentially becoming radicalised by their parents.

Nicky Morgan has proposed to increase supervision, also setting up contact points at local councils, which would enable teachers and parents to raise concerns about children.

The education secretary already declared a suppression on unregistered schools, as well as “weekend madrassas”, as some were found to be endorsing extremist notions.

It is said that there are up to 50,000 children who are home-schooled, however, the accurate number is still unknown as parents do not have to inform their local authorities.

A spokesperson for the Department for Education said that Nicky Morgan was “determined to tackle radicalisation wherever it occurs.”
