Mahatma Gandhi remembered on Martyr's Day in London

75th death anniversary (Nirvaan Divas) of Mahatma Gandhi, was commemorated on 30 January 2023 in London, with floral tributes and speeches at his statue in Tavistock Square and Parliament Square. 

HE Vikram Doraiswami, the High Commissioner of India to the UK was joined by MPs, Peers and community leaders to mark the occasion. While addressing those gathered, HE Doraiswami reportedly said, “It’s always a poignant moment to remember Mahatma Gandhi on the day of his martyrdom.

“Mahatma Gandhi‘s message was his life and his life was his message. To be able to do what he did and to live it on a daily basis ought to be an inspiration to all of us.”

The High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner Sujit Ghosh were joined by Lord Meghnad Desai, Lord Navnit Dholakia, Virendra Sharma MP, Lord Rami Ranger, Lord Raj Loomba, Valerie Vaz MP, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the UK Saida Muna Tasneem, to name a few. 

Speaking about Gandhian influence on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibir Rehman, Ms Tasneem reportedly said, “In Bangladesh, we believe in the Mahatma’s message of Ahimsa or non-violence and Satyagraha, which means passive and peaceful resistance.

“That is the ideology that our Founding Father, Bangabandhu who was a Gandhian at heart, believed in.”

She later hosted an event at the House of Lords with Lord Ranger to commemorate 51st anniversary of the historic maiden visit of Bangabandhu to the UK.
