In a heartfelt tribute to tradition and inclusivity, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labour Party hosted a memorable Diwali celebration at 10 Downing Street, marking a significant cultural milestone in British politics.
The event honoured the Festival of Lights while recognising the enduring contributions of the British Indian community to the UK. Prime Minister Starmer praised the British Indian community for their impactful contributions to society, reflecting on their consistent support, especially during challenging times. “Over the last few years, I've seen the difference you make in communities across the country. Year in, year out, you’re a part of the fabric of this nation,” he said. Highlighting the community’s dedication during the pandemic, Starmer added, “It’s right that you, having welcomed me, should know that you aren't just welcome here, you're necessary here, at the heart of government.”
Speaking to the symbolic essence of Diwali, a celebration of light over darkness, Starmer connected this theme to the shared values guiding the government’s vision. “We value and respect your heritage and traditions, and recognise the strength of our shared values and the celebration of Diwali—a time of coming together, of abundance, and welcome.”
Starmer’s reflections were not only symbolic but also linked to the government’s key priorities: fostering economic growth, positioning Britain as a clean energy leader, restoring safety on the streets, creating opportunities for all, and building a resilient NHS. “That’s the hope that drives this government too,” he said. “Hope for a better future... it’s not about party politics or shouting matches in the chamber. It’s about the shared hope that we can improve lives and give our communities a brighter future.”
Closing his speech, Starmer emphasised a government driven by values of hard work, ambition, and unity. “A government of service and ambition,” he said. “And a belief that if we work hard and work together, that better future is within reach. This has to guide every one of our government’s missions.”
The setting for the evening was a beautiful homage to Diwali’s themes, with decorations thoughtfully designed in line with Hindu traditions. Guests enjoyed an array of delicious canapés and drinks, with a blend of traditional Indian snacks and modern bites that catered to diverse palates, enhancing the celebratory spirit. The evening featured captivating cultural performances, including a traditional dance that added vibrancy and richness to the event.
The Diwali celebration at Downing Street was more than a festive gathering; it was a message of unity, hope, and shared aspirations—a vision that aligns with both Diwali and the inclusive values of British society.
