In a heartwarming homage to tradition and inclusivity, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labour Party hosted a Diwali celebration at 10 Downing Street, marking a significant cultural moment in British politics.
This event echoes the legacy of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who initiated the Diwali festivities at the iconic address 14 years ago. The celebration attracted over 100 prominent figures from the Hindu, Jain, and Sikh communities, making it a notable gathering of cultural significance.
Among the attendees were influential community leaders, including CB Patel, Publisher and Editor of Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar, alongside other dignitaries whose contributions enrich the multicultural tapestry of the UK. Seema Malhotra MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary for the Home Office, welcomed all attendees and introduced the Prime Minister.
The decorations for the evening were thoughtfully designed, adhering to Hindu traditions with simple yet elegant elements that brought a warm and festive ambiance to the historic residence. From traditional rangoli patterns to delicate diyas illuminating the space and the iconic staircase wound in marigold, the setting was a beautiful celebration of light and joy, perfectly encapsulating the essence of Diwali.
Guests were treated to an array of delectable canapés and refreshing drinks, enhancing the celebratory spirit of the evening. The culinary selections included a fusion of traditional Indian snacks and contemporary bites, catering to the diverse palates of the attendees.
The event also featured captivating performances, including a traditional dance presented by Arunima Kumar and others, which added a cultural richness to the festivities. A representative from the Hare Krishna Temple, Visakha Dasi, also addressed the audience, sharing insights into the significance of Diwali and the importance of community bonds.
In an exclusive statement to the Asian Voice, Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended Diwali wishes to the readers. He said, “Happy Diwali to all those celebrating across the UK.
“This is a time of coming together, abundance and welcome, and a moment to fix our eyes on the light which always triumphs over the darkness.
“That’s so important today, because it doesn’t just give us joy, it gives us hope – the hope that drives your seva, your hard work and your ambition.
“It’s that hope which drives this government too – a government of service and ambition. It’s a belief that, if we work hard and if we work together, a better future is in our reach.
“So may I wish you and your family a joyful Diwali, and may you continue to be a shining light for communities all across the country.”
An extensive report of the reception will follow next week.
