Ameet Jogia, an active member of the Conservative Party for over 20 years has been awarded an MBE for political and public services in The Queen’s Birthday Honours list released to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
Having joined the Conservative Party at the age of just 16, Ameet has played a leading role in helping the Party to engage with the British Indian community – particularly Britain’s 1.7 million British Indian diaspora. Ameet has since worked his way up the Party and demonstrated his commitment to the Party countless times.
Ameet is currently the Co-Chair of the Conservative Friends of India – the group which he helped the founder Lord Popat to launch ten years ago in 2012 with the then Prime Minister David Cameron. CF India is the largest affiliate group within the Party which seeks to strengthen bilateral links between the UK and India.
Recently Ameet played a key role in organising the Prime Minister’s recent trip to India, which was particularly well received by the British Indian community. Highlights of the Prime Minister’s trip included a visit to Gujarat – making Boris Johnson the first Conservative Prime Minister to visit the home state of the vast majority of British Indians. Ameet has subsequently been a champion for UK-India relations, including promoting a Free Trade Agreement between both countries.
Other recent successes include the role Ameet played in securing the Party’s one victory in his hometown of Harrow. The victory was reflective of the efforts of those like Ameet who were instrumental in successfully politically engaging with the largest British Indian population in the country.
Ameet has been an active, popular and hardworking Councillor in Harrow since 2014, proudly serving Canons Ward. He was recently elected for a third term, receiving the highest vote share than any other Councillor in the recent local elections. Ameet is known by many local residents and has been very visible in a number of high-profile campaigns in the borough.
Ameet has always been a staunch supporter of the Conservative Party and his dedication has been unparalleled. During the 2019 General Election, Ameet did not take any bereavement or paternity leave during a difficult time. Instead, he remained committed to serving his party and country. Ameet’s commitment to the Conservative cause has been said to have touched the Prime Minister.
By background, Ameet has worked in Parliament as a Political Advisor to former Minister of the Crown and Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy Lord Popat for over 10 years. Ameet was recently awarded a long service award by the Houses of Parliament. Ameet has often referred to Lord Popat as his political mentor.
Ameet’s humble background and upbringing have resonated with many within and outside the Party. Speaking at Conservative Party Conference, Ameet said his upbringing inspired him to get involved in civic duty and to give back to his local community, which had given him and his family so much.
Upon his announcement, Ameet said, “I am humbled and honoured to have received this honour for something I am so passionate about. I would like to dedicate this award to my late parents who instilled in me the values of civic duty and I would like to thank my friends and family, especially my wife who have been very supportive in my political journey. I hope that I can continue to do more to serve our society.”
