The Bhavan’s Diwali Gala 2024, held at the London Marriott Hotel on November 16, was a resplendent celebration of Indian classical arts and culture. Hosted by the Bhavan, a revered institution dedicated to promoting Indian arts and heritage in the United Kingdom, the gala was a convergence of artistic brilliance, philanthropic spirit, and cross-cultural appreciation.
The evening was graced by an eminent array of dignitaries. His Excellency Vikram Doraiswami, the High Commissioner of India to the UK along with his wife Sangeeta, attended as the Chief Guest, reflecting the deepening cultural ties between the two nations. The Guest of Honour was celebrated author and philanthropist, Sudha Murty, whose inspiring work has left an indelible mark on millions across the globe. Accompanying her were former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and wife Akshata Murty, whose presence underscored their commitment to fostering cultural and artistic exchanges between India and the UK.
The event, impeccably organised, was not merely a celebration of Diwali but also an earnest endeavour to support and sustain the Indian classical arts. With its theme of "Illuminating Heritage," the gala featured breathtaking performances by virtuosos of Indian classical music and dance, captivating an audience that included influential figures from the arts, business, and political spheres.
The evening commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolising the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. The evening was compered by Rajni Mehta. The programme began with a soul-stirring rendition of Carnatic music, Kuchippudi, Bharatanatyam and Kathak dance performances by the students of The Bhavan.
HE Vikram Doraiswami, in his inaugural address, emphasised the importance of cultural diplomacy and lauded the Bhavan for its unwavering commitment to preserving and propagating the rich traditions of Indian art in the UK. He said, “No matter where you travel or study or work, you must foster your roots and culture. Bhavan‘s Diwali Gala is one way to do that.”
This was followed by Sudha Murray’s heartfelt speech, where she highlighted the universal appeal of Indian classical arts and their ability to foster empathy and unity. Her words, infused with wisdom and humility, resonated deeply with the audience. Murty said, “I strongly believe that parents give their child two things. First is good education which gives you wings to fly, the second and most important is great Indian culture.
“You can lead a life without music, dance and literature, but it’s not a life at all. Thanks to Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan UK that the nature, the culture is not lost. It is necessary to sustain our culture to lead a good and righteous life.”
True to its mission, the Bhavan used the gala as a platform to support emerging talents in the field of Indian classical arts. Proceeds from the event were dedicated to scholarships for young artists and the maintenance of the Bhavan’s state-of-the-art facilities in London.
The Bhavan’s Diwali Gala 2024 will be remembered not only for its artistic magnificence but also for its heartfelt message of cultural unity and philanthropy. In an era where preserving cultural heritage is more critical than ever, the Bhavan continues to shine as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
