Two teachers, Mohammed Waqar (23) and Mohammed Siddique (60), are to stand trial as they have been accused of beating a 10-year-old boy for wrongly reciting the Koran at the Jamia Mosque, Sparkbrook.

The teachers were arrested in June 2014 by the West Midlands Police.

It is claimed that the boy was repeatedly slapped during religious lessons between 1st May- 13th June 2014. Further claims suggest that the victim was assaulted when he made mistakes with his studies, which also included failing to read the Koran properly. It is also alleged that the boy suffered from a black eye on one occasion.

The teachers will be standing trail on 10th August 2015 at Birmingham Crown Court, having been charged with cruelty to a person under 16, contrary to section 1 (1) of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933. On 1st April, Waqar and Siddique had pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

The maximum sentence for the offence of cruelty to a person under 16 is ten years imprisonment.
