South African authorities have started deporting refugees and asylum seekers who protested for almost five months against xenophobia. These protestors mostly hailed from African countries and demanded to be resettled, but outside South Africa. Some of them chose Canada to rehabilitate. According to the BBC, their sit-in began outside the offices of the United Nations refugee agency (UNHRC) in Cape Town in October 2019. Many of these migrants took shelter in a church during this five-month-long protest. These migrants stated that they felt unsafe because of xenophobic attacks in South Africa’s townships and that they were treated poorly. These migrants are often accused of stealing jobs and resources by local communities. However, the South African authorities haven’t revealed the names and destinations of the 20 refugees who have been deported so far.
