A survey for the Pew Research Centre, an American think tank, suggests most Europeans fear migrants will bring terrorism.
The attitudes appear to be hardening towards refugees in general, and Muslims in particular, after the arrival of over a million migrants last year, says the Pew report.
The strongest fears were recorded in Hungary with 76% of those surveyed believing that the arrival of refugees raised the chances of terrorism. Similarly, according to the Global Attitudes Survey, the fear factor in Poland was 71%, the UK 52%, the Netherlands and Germany 61%, Italy 60%, Sweden 57%, Greece 55%, France 46% and Spain 40%.
