Indian girl chosen as senior runner-up in Commonwealth essay competition

Fifteen year old Hiya Chowdhury from India, has been chosen as the senior runner-up in the Commonwealth essay competition.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition was founded in 1883 and is the world’s oldest international schools’ writing contest. For 2017 the competition was sponsored by Cambridge University Press and received approximately 12,300 entries from nearly every Commonwealth country. The competition in the modern day gives creative young writers the opportunity to explore contemporary themes through the written word. The Junior category is open to entrants aged under 14, and the Senior category is open to entrants aged 14 – 18 years.
The overarching theme for 2017 was ‘A Commonwealth for Peace’, which is also the 2017 Commonwealth Year theme.

An Alleyns Junior School student Ry Galloway, 10, from South East London, has been selected as the Junior Runner-up of The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2017.
Her poem was chosen from thousands of Junior entries by a body of judges from over 30 countries, and eventually selected by a prestigious Final Panel in Cambridge in August.
Ry will be invited to attend an Awards Ceremony at Buckingham Palace where HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will present the Senior and Junior Winners and Runners-up with their certificates. The ceremony will form part of a week of cultural and educational activities in London and Cambridge, UK. The Duchess of Cornwall will be presenting the prizes on behalf of HM The Queen, Patron of the competition. The Duchess is a keen supporter of promoting literacy amongst young people and adults.
