ACCRA: Ghana will remove a statue of Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi, from a university campus in the Capital after it sparked protests over the leader's alleged racist attitudes. Professors and students at the University of Ghana called it a “slap in the face” because of Gandhi's “racist identity”. They had begun an online petition asking for the statue's removal. It gathered over 1700 supporters. The petition cited letters written by Gandhi during his time in South Africa in which he advocated for the superiority of Indians over black Africans.

The petition also took issue with his use of the derogatory term 'kaffir' to refer to native Africans, and criticised the dearth of African heroes and heroines on campus. Ghanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government now intends to relocate the statue “to ensure its safety and avoid the controversy”.
