Police in the capital of India, Delhi, have arrested two people who are allegedly important members of the “Indian branch” of al-Qaeda.
One of the men detained, Muhammad Asif (41), from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, is allegedly a founding member of al-Qaeda in the region.
It is said that al-Qaeda set up its South Asian base about over a year ago, where they brought militant groups from across the area together. It is alleged that the group was also behind the murder of four bloggers in Bangladesh, and instrumental behind many attacks in Pakistan.
The two detained men were also involved in recruiting young Indians into their group, Indian authorities have said.
The arrest of Muhammad Asif is said to have led to the arrest of the second man who allegedly ran the social media for al-Qaeda.
Police stated that the arrests will prove as an important move to uncover al-Qaeda's operations within India and in South Asia.
