What's in a name? asked Shakespeare, apparently, everything for the Haryana government. In a recent move, the state administration resorted to rename Delhi suburb Gurgaon as Gurugram. Called the Millennium City where top multinational firms, expensive homes and gleaming malls bask in their own glory, Gurgaon has since always been one of the top residential destinations in the country.
Said to be the place's historical name, the 'guru' is in reference to Guru Dronacharya, master archer who features in the Mahabharata. Mewat district also got a name-change and will now be called as Nuh. “Haryana is a historic land of the Bhagwat Gita and Gurgaon had been a centre of learning,” a Haryana government spokesman said. Now with all done and finished, the best part of the change was when our witty and trolling Twitteratti made a field day out of it. #Gurugram went trending on social media for the better part of Tuesday with tweets mocking the new name coming down in a wave.
