Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa has announced a new health scheme that would help in detecting illnesses early. Amma Master health check-ups would soon be available at government hospitals for less than a £10. The package includes blood, sugar, heart, kidney, and liver tests; even cervical and breast cancer tests for women. Other than that, many important tests and check ups at primary health centres would be made available free. The scheme has taken a leaf from Jayalalithaa's Amma Canteens that sell Idli for one rupee; a move that helped her win sweeping majority in Lok Sabha polls last year. It was later followed by Amma Pharmacies, Amma Cement and Amma Water.
However, many are apprehensible about the quality of infrastructure in government medical college hospitals, and are questioning if they could be able to go for health checkups at massive scale.
