The South is seething, and in good measure. Youngsters and old alike are ferociously typing on their keypads, keeping #PoMoneModi alive on the world wide web. A parody of popular Mohanlal punch line 'Po Mone Dinesha' meaning 'Go home' in the worst dismissive style possible, the hashtag has been trending since yesterday, and even became the second most discussed topic.
Modi, in a 'slight' off judgement compared Kerala to African country Somalia at an election rally. Speaking in his trademark style, Modi said, "The unemployment rate in Kerala is at least three times higher than the national average. Infant mortality rate among the Scheduled Tribe community in Kerala is worse than in Somalia." And what followed, can only be described as a tsunami that aimed to take the PM down. Visibly miffed (and somewhat hurt) Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was the first to react, asking Modi to show some "political decency". In a letter addressed to the PM, Chandy said the comparison of Kerala to Somalia claiming the state had "adverse" economic and social parameters, has "shocked" the people of the state as it has nothing to do with the ground realities. He also asked Modi to withdraw the statement as they are "baseless and contrary to ground realities." "Is it not a shame for the Prime Minister to pronounce that a state like Somalia exists in the country?"
Meanwhile, the ever-so-ready Twitteratti had a field day tweeting and trolling the beloved prime minister. "PM sir, you questioned the DNA of Biharis and you got a resounding answer, now you compare Kerala to Somalia. Awaiting 19th may!! #PoMoneModi," one tweeted. While another conceded, "Please make sure you don't demean the people of Somalia or make fun of Somalia while condemning the statement of our PM. #PoMoneModi." Others included, "Kerala enjoys beef, alochol, has educated women, celebrates all religions. No wonder Modiji cannot fathom it. #PoMoneModi" and "Somalian Foot in the mouth moment! #PoMoneModi"
