Karunanidhi a towering figure in Indian politics: PM Modi

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes to former Tamil Nadu CM and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi as the Centre released a commemorative coin marking the departed politician’s centenary.
In a letter to Karunanidhi’s son and current CM M K Stalin, the PM praised the DMK stalwart, describing him as a “towering figure” in Indian politics, literature, and society. Modi’s sentiments were shared in a post on platform X by Stalin, who expressed gratitude, saying: “I wholeheartedly thank Hon’ble Prime Minister Thiru. @narendramodi avl. for his kind wishes and support…”

Stalin expressed pride in the national recognition of his father’s legacy, saying: “I am happy that the entire country is celebrating Kalaignar through the centenary coin.”
Defence minister Rajnath Singh, who officially unveiled the coin at a ceremony in Chennai, remembered Karunanidhi as a national figure. “A man whose influence extended far beyond Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi was a titan of Indian politics, a cultural stalwart, and a relentless advocate for social justice,” Singh said.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute, highlighting Karunanidhi’s progressive vision. “Kalaignar Karunanidhi’s socially progressive vision and unwavering dedication to empowering people paved the way for millions to live a life of dignity,” he said. He credited Karunanidhi’s leadership for transforming Tamil Nadu. Earlier in the day, Singh and Stalin visited Karunanidhi’s memorial at Marina Beach in Chennai. The ceremony also saw the attendance of BJP state president K Annamalai, who was seated in the front row.
