Karnataka HC orders advocate’s detention for ‘wild’ charges

Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court has ordered the detention of KS Anil, a Bengaluru-based advocate, in judicial custody for a week over his “wild and reckless” allegations against the judicial system and judges.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale passed an order to this affect in a suo motu criminal contempt petition registered by the court against the advocate in 2019.
The bench pointed out that the record placed before the court clearly shows that the accused (Anil) has no regard for the judicial system. The court said the advocate had been making wild allegations against the judicial system, especially judicial officers, and trying to dent the image of the system. “This court is left with no other option except to pass an order for taking the accused into judicial custody,” the bench observed while directing that the accused be produced on the next date of hearing. The HC’s 2019 suo motu criminal contempt proceedings against him came after he made allegations against the single bench and division bench hearing his case.
