Bonanza for Tamil Nadu MLAs, ministers

CHENNAI: Salaries of Tamil Nadu legislators have been doubled as announced by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. The CM said that MLAs will now receive Rs 105,000 per month from the earlier Rs 55,000. He also announced that MLAs' Local Area Development Fund would be increased from £200,000 to 250,000. Also, allowances for the Chief Minister, Ministers, the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Leader of the Opposition, and the Government Chief Whip have been increased with effect from July 1 this year.

Pension for former MLAs and members of the now defunct legislative council will soon be increased to Rs 20,000 from the current Rs 12,000. Monthly pension for journalists have been raised to Rs 10,000 from the current Rs 8,000. Regarding the MLAs' pay hike, Palaniswami said their salary would be increased from Rs 8,000 to Rs 30,000, compensatory allowance will be Rs 10,000 from Rs 7,000 while telephone allowance has been revised to Rs 7,500 from Rs 5,000. Postal allowance will remain the same at Rs 2,500.

The Chief Minister, Ministers, and Speaker, will now receive compensatory allowance at Rs 15,000 and expenditure allowance Rs 10,000 and constituency allowance Rs 25,000.
