102-year-old wins gram panchayat poll

Mysuru: Centenarian Gowthimmamma of Doddalathuru, Kollegal taluk in Karnataka, defied age by winning the gram panchayat poll in Mysuru. Pitted against her own relative Chennajamma, the 102- year- old grandmother of 50 grandchildren, promised clean drinking water and good roads during her election campaigns. She won by 136 votes, rolling in 354 against the opponent's 218. She said, “I didn't expect the results. I will work for the people and take up developmental works.”
