Punjab man gets 70-year jail term for triple murder

A district and sessions court in Ropar, Punjab, has sentenced a man from Morinda town to 70 years in jail for the murder of his wife, sister-in-law and wife’s nephew, besides injuring another nephew. District and sessions judge Ramesh Kumari agreed with the additional public prosecutor that the convict, Alam, was guilty of both murder and attempt to murder. He was awarded three life sentences of 20 years each for the triple murder and a 10-year jail term for the attempt to murder. The order, made it clear that the sentences will run consecutively. On the night of June 3, 2020, Alam had hacked to death his wife Kajal, sister-in-law Jaspreet Kaur and Jaspreet’s son Sahil, with an axe, while they were asleep at his wife’s parental house. He also attacked and tried to kill Jaspreet’s second son, Bobby, but he survived. In Feb 2021, police framed charges against Alam, and the trial concluded on July 20, 2024.
