The Rajya Sabha last week passed the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill, with Union home minister Amit Shah saying that the rules for the implementation of the proposed law would have safeguards against any misuse of all identification database and biological samples collected from convicts and those accused of crimes by fixing accountability of those entrusted with the safety of data.
Shah defended the bill against opposition’s charge of being intrusive and violative of the SC verdict on piracy and said that only designated people will have the code to access the data. He reiterated his promise to keep those detained for apprehension of breach of peace and in connection with "democratic" political protests will be kept out of the purview of the provisions which will shortly become law after President’s assent.
