New Delhi/Chandigarh: Delivering a blow to the BJP, the Shiromani Akali Dal has passed a resolution opposing the proposed land acquisition bill, saying the bill “lacks fool proof safeguards for compensating the farmers with adequate actual market value of land.”
The SAD's move is bound to compound the Narendra Modi government's problems in Parliament, coming as it does after a similar resistance by another BJP ally, the Shiv Sena. At a meeting held in Delhi, the SAD's core committee passed the resolution against the bill even as Modi went on to clear the air in the f Rajya Sabha over corporate role in the land acquisition process. The resolution said it should be made mandatory to get consent of majority of farmers and land owners for acquisition.
