Kolkata: CBI arrested RG Kar hospital’s ex-principal Sandip Ghosh along with his security guard and two others - a hospital vendor and a medicine store owner - after interrogating him through the day on corruption charges levelled against him by a former colleague and a senior health department official.

Ghosh, who had been facing interrogation by CBI’s Special Crime Branch regarding the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case, was taken to the Anti-Corruption Branch's office at Nizam Palace in south Kolkata shortly before his arrest.

Ghosh has faced 17 days of questioning and two polygraph tests in the 21 days since CBI took over from Kolkata Police the probe into the Aug 9 rape-murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor studying for her postgraduation.

His arrested co-accused in the corruption case are Biplab Singha, owner of Ma Tara Traders; Suman Hazra, who runs a medical store in Howrah that allegedly sold recycled drugs collected from RG Kar hospital; and the ex-principal's security guard Afsar Ali.

Calcutta HC recently ordered a state govt formed SIT that was looking into the allegations to hand over the probe to CBI.

Ghosh had been at the Salt Lake CGO Complex office since 10 am, answering questions on the rape-murder, sources said. A little before 7 pm, he was whisked away in a car to the agency's Nizam Palace office. He was taken into custody around 8 pm. The ex-principal resigned on Aug 12, facing a backlash over his handling of the aftermath of the rape-murder on campus.

He was appointed principal of Calcutta National Medical College, another state-run college, within hours - a move whose propriety Calcutta HC questioned before ordering him to go on leave.

Trinamool Congress's former MP Kunal Ghosh said the party had "nothing to say" on Ghosh's arrest.
