Despite the suspension of Congress MLAs Charles Marngar and Gabriel Wahlang for alleged anti-party activities, the two, along with Celestine Lyngdoh, officially joined the National People's Party (NPP). Earlier, the three Congress legislators met Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma to complete the formalities for their merger with the NPP. This shift leaves the Congress party with only one MLA and one MP in Meghalaya. Meanwhile, the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, which previously had 28 MLAs, now increases its strength to 31. The suspension of Marngar and Wahlang for six years over alleged anti-party activities raises questions about whether the Congress will pursue legal recourse.
