The West Bengal state government has launched the brand new West Bengal Transport Card which, in all probabilities could evolve into something similar to London's all-in-one Oyster Card for the metropolis' transport. The card can be used by commuters to pay fares for all state-run buses, trams, and ferries in Kolkata.

Transport Minister Shubhendu Adhikari said the card's usage bars the city's metro service, adding that it is "under the Central Government". Although senior government officials said gradually, they would want to get Metro on board. In related news, drivers and conductors of state-run buses received a make over. They will now be seen in dark blue trousers and light blue shirts with Mamata Banerjee's slogan 'Safe Drive, Save Life' written on it. Also, a smart phone app called 'Patha Disha' has been launched which will provide commuters with real time information on how far their bus is, whether there are seats available, and how long it will take to reach their destination.

It will also proceed help in "accident management". Meaning, in case of an accident, police, hospitals, fire station, and other required agencies will receive alert for quick assistance. The initiative is being supported by the World Bank, along with Korea Green Growth Trust Fund. Ms R Basu, World Bank, said, "As one of the most densely populated cities, Kolkata is a challenge but could soon join the ranks of cities like London and Seoul which use data to deliver better transport."

Also, buses will have GPS systems installed, keeping the safety of women in mind, a CCTV and a panic button in case of an emergency.
