US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin joined others, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and UK PM Rishi Sunak, in congratulating PM Narendra Modi for the ruling NDA alliance’s majority in Lok Sabha elections and his upcoming third term in office. Putin and Sunak spoke to Modi to congratulate him. Sunak even put out a tweet in Devanagari script in which he said India & UK share a close friendship and it will only grow.
About 90 foreign leaders from close to 70 countries had greeted Modi. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, who will host next week the G7 summit which Modi is expected to attend, also congratulated Modi.
“Congratulations to PM Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory, and the nearly 650 million voters in this historic election. The friendship between our nations is only growing as we unlock a shared future of unlimited potential,”said Biden in a post on X.
Putin phoned Modi and said the results reflected the support of “the political course pursued by the Indian leadership, recognition of the results achieved in the socio-economic development of the country and strengthening of its international authority”.
“Both sides expressed satisfaction with the current level of the Russian-Indian special and privileged strategic partnership, which will continue expanding in all areas. The two countries’ leaders agreed to continue constructive personal interaction. A congratulatory letter was also sent to Narendra Modi,” said a Russian readout.
Commending the Indian voters, poll workers, civil society, and journalists for their “commitment and vital contributions” to India’s democratic processes and institutions, the US said in a statement it’s looking forward to continuing to further the partnership with the Indian government to promote prosperity and innovation, address the climate crisis, and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
