Almond milk has become one of those dietary phenomenons which people have made an integral part of their lives. However, it is not as healthy as one would have imagined for your child. Parents are being warned that giving plant-derived drinks, such as almond milk, to your children can be harmful for their health.

There has been a frenzy after an 11-month old baby was diagnosed with scurvy in Spain. The baby, who developed scurvy, a disease which is very rare in developed countries is said to have been mostly fed on almond milk-based formula, from the age of around 10 weeks. The almond formula is friendly for vegans.

Researchers from Valencia's La Fe university hospital found that although the formula almond milk included all the essential nutrients, the way it was processed meant the vitamin C was not effective.

While there has been a health-scare among children regarding the consumption of almond milk, the almond market has seemed to have crushed after being on a constant rise for several years.

There were reports of the health benefits of almond consumption, which boosted its intake among the thriving middle classes in countries such as China. However, the persistent rise in the almond market ultimately crumbled demands. Ashok Krishen, global head of edible nuts at Olam, the agricultural commodities trader said, “Emerging market demand with less price elasticity began to fall at first and was followed by the traditional developed markets towards the end of 2015.”
