A study has found that walking or cycling for at least 20 minutes a day can reduce the risk of a 60-year-old man of having heart failure by a fifth.

Researchers had monitored 33,000 Swedish men between 1998 to 2012. They found that those who were least physically active were more likely to develop heart failure.

Heart failure develops when the heart becomes too weak to pump enough blood around the body.

The analysis also stated that walking and cycling for 20 minutes a day has proven to be a beneficial form of physical activity for people aged 60, and was associated with the biggest risk reduction. It was more protective than heavy-duty or more extensive forms of physical exercise, such as running.
