In January, many people take up “veganism” for the whole month, hence the term “Veganuary”. It is said that this year, a whopping 100,000 people have pledged to become vegans for the whole month, up 40,000 from 2017.

Vegan options are now available at many mainstream eateries, such as vegan pan crust at Pizza Hut, avocado pizza at Zizzi, oat milk at Starbucks, as well as chilli non carne tacos at All Bar One.

Vegan blogger and the author of Eat, Drink and Live Like You Give A Sh!t, Sean O'Callaghan, 43, has been a vegan for 20 years. He believes there are much more vegan choices available compared to a couple of decades ago. He said, “People are understanding it doesn't have to be dreary, like 1970s powdered soya milk and a block of tofu. When you go out, you don't have to be the one compromising the rest of the group, or the oddball sitting in the corner, with a bowl of carrots.”

While many people may think that becoming vegan for a month will make them “cool” considering many people are following this so-called trend; but people are opting to become vegans for health reasons, as well as for social and ethical reasons, and not just for Veganuary, but for the long-run.
