It’s almost that time of the year to pack your bags and set out to travel. While travelling can be a lot of fun, it comes with challenges. With fast food and vending machines being the most convenient choices, they are not always the healthiest. The urge to snack or binge-eat is common while travelling and sets off a dietary cycle of unhealthy eating.
This article discusses some healthy snack alternatives you can take while travelling.
Pack fruits and vegetables
Packing apples, bananas, grapes, oranges, baby carrots, sliced bell peppers or sweet peppers, and celery sticks is advisable. They are high in fibre, keep you fuller for longer, and provide a satisfying crunch.
Make energy balls
Energy bites, or balls - however, which way you want to call them, are small bite-sized snacks made of nutritious ingredients such as oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits. They can be easily prepared at home, have a decent shelf life and will keep your hands from straying into the chips aisle.
Pack yogurt
What’s summer without a cold yogurt parfait? Pack some unsweetened yogurt, and layer with your favourite toppings such as berries, chia seeds, granola, honey and cacao nibs. Store with your ice pack for a delicious treat.
Dried fruits, nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds pair well with dried or fresh fruit. They are full of protein, healthy fats and fibre. Follow your grandmother’s footsteps and pack a bag of walnuts, almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, or any other nuts you prefer for a little energy boost.
