NHS England has announced that mental health support will now be accessible through the 111 phone line, making England one of the first countries to offer comprehensive 24/7 mental health crisis support via a single number.
This new service is available to individuals of all ages, including children, who are experiencing a mental health crisis. By calling 111 and selecting the appropriate option, they will be connected to a trained mental health professional. The support staff will assist callers in navigating the right steps, including arranging face-to-face community support or directing them to crisis cafes or safe havens.
For cases requiring emergency department care or if there is an immediate risk to life, every A&E department across the country will have a liaison psychiatric team available to provide swift, specialised care.
Claire Murdoch, NHS National Director for Mental Health, stated, “I am incredibly proud that we are among the first nations to offer a free, universal mental health support service through a single, easily accessible phone line.
“This integrated service ensures that individuals of all ages receive specialist mental health care and have access to face-to-face support in a safe and therapeutic setting. If you or someone you know is in urgent need of mental health support, please call 111 and select the mental health option.”
Additionally, NHS Talking Therapy Services will be available for those dealing with conditions such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and PTSD.
