If you have Diabetes, you may have been told about the importance of looking after your eyes, your feet, your diet and checking your glucose daily. But what about your oral health?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) has been proposed as the sixth most common complication of Diabetes Mellitus.  People with Diabetes are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop periodontal disease and other oral complications such as; fungal infections, chronic ulcers, dry mouth and consequently decay.

Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the gums and the bone that support the teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. In fact, statistics show that 1 in 5 cases of tooth loss is linked to Diabetes. Gum disease can also have other implications such as increased sugar levels and a higher risk of cardiovascular problems.

Periodontitis and Diabetes have a two-way relationship; that is, being diabetic leads to an increased risk of developing gum problems, and having gum disease can also affect the body’s glycemic index (in people with or without Diabetes). Whilst non diabetics might be able to tolerate an increase in the glucose levels when being affected by gum disease, we all know how important it is to maintain low glucose levels in Diabetes. Having severe gum disease leads to increased sugar levels, and poor glycaemic control can lead to other complications of the diabetic condition. As it can become a vicious cycle, the early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal disease is essential for people with Diabetes.

The good news is that by treating gum disease, studies report a reduction of up to 0.4% in the glucose levels (HbA1c). Studies also show, that 1% reduction of HbA1c can have a significant positive impact in the risk for cardiovascular complications.
