Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has decided to make its flagship Range Rover luxury SUVs in India. For the first time, these top-of-the-line vehicles will be assembled outside JLR’s Solihull factory in the UK.
The move to assemble (through completely-knocked down kits) the cars at Pune factory of Tata Motors will see the company pay less import duty to govt, leading to savings of 18-22%. So, price reduction for Range Rover Autobiography model will be Rs 60,00,000 and it will now come for £260,000 (ex-showroom). Range Rover Sport will be priced at £140,000 after a cut of Rs 40,00,000.
Tata group chairman N Chandrasekaran said, “To have Range Rover flagships being manufactured in India is a superb feeling. It’s a very, very special moment for us, and I am very proud. I want to express our gratitude to the vision of Ratan Tata, who got Jaguar Land Rover into the Tata family 15 years ago. And, what a journey it has been for JLR from then on.”
The latest move also signals aggressive posturing of JLR in India as it looks to double sales in the country over next three years, while planning six new cars over four years. It looks to take on German trio of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi.
