Director Imtiaz Ali's "Rockstar," despite receiving mixed critical reviews upon its release in 2011, has developed a devoted and vocal cult following over a decade later. In a recent interview, Imtiaz, gearing up for his upcoming film "Amar Singh Chamkila," revealed that he has engaged in disputes with "Rockstar" fans who are unwilling to acknowledge the film's shortcomings. Diljit Dosanjh, who features in "Amar Singh Chamkila," joined Imtiaz in the interview, which was hosted on Netflix India's YouTube channel.
Imtiaz expressed his admiration for the film, stating, "I'm a huge fan of it." He shared insights, saying, "I have many critics around me. Sometimes it lands me in trouble, but genuine feedback is invaluable. Processing criticism is a personal journey, often involving self-reflection. I've clashed with 'Rockstar' fans who were dismayed by my acknowledgment of the film's flaws. On one occasion, I mentioned it was imperfect."
Diljit reacted in shock, asking, "What?" Upon Imtiaz's explanation that "there were many aspects of the film that were problematic," Diljit shook his head, repeating, "No, no, no." Imtiaz then shifted the conversation, acknowledging, "This is a lengthy debate. People have been upset with me." Diljit defended the fans, stating they were justified in their reaction to Imtiaz. "If a poet begins dissecting the meaning behind their poetry, it could be seen as inappropriate. People interpret things differently," Diljit remarked.
